The 2nd Street Polish Society Scholarship

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS APPLICATIONS PREVIOUS WINNERS

2011 Scholarship Details

In 2011, the Second Street Polish Society will award four (4) merit-based scholarships to eligible elementary, high school and college students. These awards will provide a $500 scholarship each year, in September, for that year of enrollment in school. The four awards are categorized as such:

The scholarships are established to encourage the youth of the area to gain knowledge and understanding of our Polish heritage. The Second Street Polish Society feels it is important for today’s youth to better appreciate our heritage and many of our upbringings.

ELIGIBILITY: The Second Street Polish Society Scholarship Awards are open to all direct descendants of the members of the Second Street Polish Society. The award is open to any child, grandchild or stepchild of any member, who will be attending a school in any of the grades for which there is an award.

REQUIREMENTS:Scholarships are awarded to students who are enrolled in a school beginning in September of that given year. The awards will be selected from a panel established by the Second Street Polish Society in response to the applications submitted. The requirements are for students to prepare and submit information about a topic related to our Polish heritage. 2011’s submission will be related to the individual student. The title of the submission for 2011 will vary among the different age groups.

For grades 5 – 8, the title is “A Polish Sports Personality.” A 250-word essay should be submitted presenting your view of a successful Polish sports personality, and why you think the individual is successful.

For those students to be enrolled in High School, the title is “A Polish Holiday.” There are many holidays in Poland for which many of us are unfamiliar. A 500-word essay will be submitted explaining the origins and meaning of a particular Polish holiday.

For the upcoming college student, the title is “The Beatification of Pope John Paul II.” A 1,000-word essay will be submitted explaining the history and life of Karol Wojtyla and his journey to ultimate canonization. The purpose of the paper will be to explain the instances that have supported the appointment for Pope John Paul IIs’ canonization.

For 2011, students in grades 1 through 4 will submit to a coloring contest. The Society will provide the pictures.

The deadline for the submission of application will be August 9, 2011. Winners will be announced at the annual Second Street Polish Society Summer party, at Echo’s in North Wildwood, on Saturday, August 20, 2011.
